The other day, a friend of mine says to me, “hey, you like Kyle (Rayner) right? Did you know he first appears in shadow in a another Lantern book that came out before Green Lantern 50?”
And of course, I didn’t know that as I was reading the Green Lantern title in 1994 when Hal (Jordan) went postal & murdered nearly every other GL out there including Sinestro.
We chatted about this issue all the way to the comic shop and looked for the issue in question in the back issue bin as well as the shops dollar bins.
We left the shop having no luck finding the Lantern book he was trying to think of and I knew I had the GL 48 & GL 50, extra copies, at home. (Pictured above.)
Once home, I sat down to find out what issue actually showed up at the same time as GL 50 did and I came up with Green Lantern Corps Quarterly #8. Its the last issue of the series due to the events of GL 50.
Once I found out it was this issue, I recalled that I had gone back once and picked up all these GLCQ issues because I dig the old Lantern stories & Lobo stories. I then decided to hop into my car because I recalled another collectables shop actually had one of these in their back issue bin. This shop does not do new comics, so everything is back issues sold to them buy customers looking to unload their collections.
I dug through that shops Lantern boxes and found the above copy of GLCQ8 and thumbed through the book to see where this appearance of Kyle Rayner is in the book…
So, there is Kyle’s first appearance as a Lantern, in his normal updated costume which is not what he is wearing at the end of GL50. Kind of wild what a delay will do to books coming out for key issues.
I’m not really a writer but thought why not blog about this & see if anyone notices. Lol. So, here is my first & maybe only blog post about appearances. Wish the powers that be at DC still had writers of this caliber & stories as funtastic as all this. The 90s were a wonderful era of comics. The natural hand off of old to new characters might not have lasted or always done well but those characters are all mostly still around being shit on by DC & we keep buying anyways.
So thats all for me, Mr Maczaps. Find me more on Facebook. I also have a cosplay page these days under Movie Star Mikey. Check it out. Can also find me under that name on Instagram. Cowabunga dudes!
