The other day, a friend of mine says to me, “hey, you like Kyle (Rayner) right? Did you know he first appears in shadow in a another Lantern book that came out before Green Lantern 50?”
And of course, I didn’t know that as I was reading the Green Lantern title in 1994 when Hal (Jordan) went postal & murdered nearly every other GL out there including Sinestro.
We chatted about this issue all the way to the comic shop and looked for the issue in question in the back issue bin as well as the shops dollar bins.
We left the shop having no luck finding the Lantern book he was trying to think of and I knew I had the GL 48 & GL 50, extra copies, at home. (Pictured above.)
Once home, I sat down to find out what issue actually showed up at the same time as GL 50 did and I came up with Green Lantern Corps Quarterly #8. Its the last issue of the series due to the events of GL 50.
Once I found out it was this issue, I recalled that I had gone back once and picked up all these GLCQ issues because I dig the old Lantern stories & Lobo stories. I then decided to hop into my car because I recalled another collectables shop actually had one of these in their back issue bin. This shop does not do new comics, so everything is back issues sold to them buy customers looking to unload their collections.
I dug through that shops Lantern boxes and found the above copy of GLCQ8 and thumbed through the book to see where this appearance of Kyle Rayner is in the book…
So, there is Kyle’s first appearance as a Lantern, in his normal updated costume which is not what he is wearing at the end of GL50. Kind of wild what a delay will do to books coming out for key issues.
I’m not really a writer but thought why not blog about this & see if anyone notices. Lol. So, here is my first & maybe only blog post about appearances. Wish the powers that be at DC still had writers of this caliber & stories as funtastic as all this. The 90s were a wonderful era of comics. The natural hand off of old to new characters might not have lasted or always done well but those characters are all mostly still around being shit on by DC & we keep buying anyways.
So thats all for me, Mr Maczaps. Find me more on Facebook. I also have a cosplay page these days under Movie Star Mikey. Check it out. Can also find me under that name on Instagram. Cowabunga dudes!
So, I’ve been gone for AGES!
Not really going to be doing many updates, but figured I was here and updated my “want list”, so why not say hey at the same time.
Things are not looking up right now in my world… I have a pituitary tumor (in the brain) which is wrapped partially around my carotid artery. Makes having high blood pressure or exercising kind of dangerous… So money is tight & I just shared the following two comics for sale on Facebook (where I sell most of my stuff) & my personal IG page…
So, I guess, hop on over to Mr Maczaps Comics and take a look around.
I guess now is also a good time to mention I’m trying to help setup a Turtles themed comic con/expo/event August 4th, called Shellabration 2018. More on that: Shellabration 2018
So far we have a couple vendors and a couple artists. Vendor tables are $50 and tickets are only $5 at the door. Hope to see you there.
That’s really all I’ve got…
There’s also a Facebook event set up for this.. Share it. Have fun.
So today I was just browsing shop pages and came across a double video posting from Shellback showing off the shop…
Sad (immensely) to have to report that Steve has decided they will be closing up shop mid October!! 😭
There have been some good times, lots of money and way more laughs there. Not as many as I would have liked recently due to all my issues but still a grand old time. I guess I’m due to get back there once more before then.
Shellback Artworks FB to see the post of the shop. Get there before it’s too late… 😞
Been considering giving up comics for a while… but I’m thinking now, that I will just use the old and extra books I don’t want or need for target practice. This should help reduce the number of near mint versions of some books which will help value go up AND it means I don’t have to buy targets to shoot at…
I can just grab a stack of stuff that won’t sell and fire off a couple rounds into it and then see what’s what… or maybe someone will pay me to not shoot holes in them there books… who knows?
That’s all folks…
Volume one signed by Kevin Eastman and Steve Lavigne.
Volume two signed by Eastman & Lavigne.
And then there’s…
Vol three is unsigned.
Let’s make a deal. It’s time for a refill on the prescription so I need to sell quite a few things!
TMNT vol 1 #5 first printing, signed by Kevin Eastman & Steve Lavigne sometime in the late 80s. Signed also by Peter Laird earlier this month at Shellback Artworks FCBD event!
Picked up this Nathan the Caveman by Ben Bishop this FCBD and finally sat down to read it tonight.
Great story. I don’t have the proper verbiage to describe it appropriately. I mean, really.
Great characters. Great feeling of them not just as two dimensional characters on paper. They could almost be friends or even a soft reflection of portions of my personal timeline, my life.
The artwork is awesome. I’m not going to post more, but if this in any way makes you want to read this… Track down Ben Bishop via Facebook or his site (bishart.net) and see if he has any copies left.
He is working on some new stuff and if I was personally rich and famous, I’d back all his work and have a house full of commissions.
Check out his TMNT #55RI cover (and prints) as well.
This morning I awoke 15 minutes before my 6am alarm went off. Bonus time for getting ready and getting out the door!
Managed to forgot my toll pass device but noticed before leaving the street… Picked up a folding chair to use while waiting before the shop opened…
Fast forward to about 7:45 am and I arrived at SHELLBACK ARTWORKS in Wells, Maine! To my surprise there was one out of state car already awaiting in the parking lot. Fast forward another half hour or so and the next three people arrived, friends from prior years!
Fast forward again to 11:30. We have all had multiple visits inside. The line outside isn’t very long and it was drizzling.
We all chatted, my cat got a new fan on her FB page and then it was almost time…
First trip inside for my pal so he got his photo taken with the guys. I had some books signed by all and Ben Bishop signed all the prints of his I snagged.
My pal Mikey was outside braving the cool misty rain! Where the line was short (almost no on outside after one trip through and i was 3rd or 4th person upstairs!) I decided to try getting a round two taken care of ASAP.
My TMNT messenger bag had already been signed by Steve and I was able to add Peter Laird and Eric Talbot today (and I had 3 items signed by them both on one trio! I feel special! Lol).
This is my 2009 (re)print of TMNT v1 collected edition which features the first 11 issues, micros series books and I think, the Fugitoid one shot. Again, all signatures where there before except Peter & Eric.
I had a TMNT #5 signed by Eastman & Lavigne that I’ve been holding onto for a while and decided now was a great time to have Peter sign it too so he did, inside with the others!
Ben Bishop signed his Nathan the Caveman sc novel for me. Can’t wait to read this.
I’m just going to post the prints and couple of sketches next. Getting late here and I’m beat.
These two books were an impulse buy… another friend (a few really) bought some and I thought, man I should have brought mine, but then picked these up real quick for round three…
And now, the prints…
That’s all I’ve got. Check out the Shellback Artworks FB page to see other fans pictures and cool items. If you missed out, I’m sorry… it was a wonderful time!!
Shellback Artworks, Wells Maine!!
TMNT!!! Cowabunga! #FCBD2016
Took a ride today because I thought I was fully feeling up to it… Went to see Rich Woodall and pick up a BatMikey and a page from a magazine he did, that he drew me into the Granite Con scene. (A NH magazine, which I should see if I can get a copy online maybe?)
Also snagged his BatRaph…
Here’s me, with Rich, his son and three dudes from Double Midnight in NH… I need a frame for the page. (No color… It’s the artwork before that part…)
I also picked up some blank/sketch variants from Jetpack. A friend snagged a Power Rangers #1 blank for me too.
Then we had a quick bit and I headed off solo to Shellback!
Ran into a few friends, Robert (pic) and Ben (not pictured, his birthday today) and picked up a couple back issues and had Steve sign a few items.
And I will have to upload more pictures later, after I take them…
